Product Description Recorded live in concert, Navidad: Christmas in the New World presents the lively rhythms of Latin American music. This infectiously joyful CD features music from eight Latin American countries, encompassing the styles of five centuries, from the 16th century to the present day. Foremost are the captivating Baroque Christmas villancicos for voices, guitars, and percussion, blending indigenous music from Spain, Africa, and Latin America. Navidad recounts 500 years of Latin American history, from the 16th century to the present day. During the 16th and 17th centuries Spanish missionaries drew locals to the New World cathedrals by melding indigenous music with traditional Iberian dance forms. The result is a recently discovered trove of infectiously joyful villancicos for voices, guitars, and percussion spirited music based on Spanish dance forms which lay neglected for centuries in Latin American cathedrals until the past few years. These beautiful tapestries of Central and South American, African, and Spanish music are a delightful, fresh, and surprising discovery. Seattle Pro Musica performs this jubilant music from the Baroque era by composers from Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Bolivia, including Juan de Araujo, Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, Tomás Pascual, and Tomás de Torrejón y Velazco. The unique percussion for this vivacious music ranges from log drums and rain sticks to river stones and deer antlers. Also featured on the CD are exciting new works by contemporary Latin American composers from Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and Aruba, including Heitor Villa-Lobos, Alberto Grau, César Alejandro Carrillo and Ernani Aguiar. Some of these new works incorporate fascinating vocal techniques, with singers imitating the sounds of the Tiendaian jungle, Latin American folk instruments and vocal percussion. In addition to Spanish, Seattle Pro Musica also performs works in Quechua (the language of the Incas, still spoken in Ecuador today), Nahautal (the language of the Aztecs), Papiamento (the language spoken in Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire), and Hausa (one of the main languages of the African Sahel). Navidad was recorded live in concert at Bastyr University Chapel in December 2008. Of the live performance, classical music reviewer Philippa Kiraly wrote in The Gathering Note: The concert was a delight from start to finish. With its customary polish and plenty of energy, Pro Musica sang modern music from Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and Aruba, and baroque music from Peru, Mexico, Bolivia and Guatemala ... with rhythms incorporated from its indigenous population and imported African heritage as well as from the Iberian peninsula... the Pro Musica singers, including its smaller groups Women s Schola and Madrigalia as well as the full choir, sang on pitch with rich, clear tone, crisp articulation and spot-on togetherness in often complicated or opposing rhythms; some songs being smooth and gentle, but many more with vigor and verve, all under Thomas s expert guidance."
