Witness this live 2005 set by his New Nonet, which not only marks one of the few times the alto saxophonist has convened such a group but also the first time he has entrusted a fellow musician to direct it: tenor saxophonist Ohad Talmor. His active, coloristic arrangements, featuring cello, guitar and bass clarinet, set off Konitz's streamlined, surpassingly lucid solos in new and vital ways. Recorded over five nights at New York's Jazz Standard, New Nonet includes "ChromaticLee Suite," a six-part invention by Konitz and Talmor that points back to Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool (which featured Konitz, the last survivor of those sessions) while asserting a weighty modernism. The topnotch cast includes trumpeter Russ Johnson, drummer Matt Wilson, and guitarist Ben Monder, whose flashing notes cut across one dark arrangement like rays of sunlight.
